I deleted all 225 movies from my queue on Netflix a couple days ago. Last night, we get the email saying that profiles will be staying.

You're welcome.

Of course, now there are people who didn't use profiles losing their minds because Netflix had said profiles prevented them from doing other unspecified awesome things and now us profile nuts are ruining it for everyone else.

Meh. How can you be upset that a feature you don't use isn't going away? Basically, because Netflix set it up to be a war between those who do, and those who do not. Now they have to sort it out. I have a feeling the backlash on the flip-flop won't be as strong as the original fight was, but you never know. There are some people legitimately upset about profiles sticking around. Though whether they are, "I'll be dropping my account on the date you don't turn off profiles" upset like the people who were writing in to say, "I'll be dropping my account on the date you turn off profiles" remains to be seen. If so, this could turn into an interesting series of "we are," "no we aren't," "we are," "no we aren't."

All that because they couldn't just come out and tell the truth when they said they wanted to get rid of them, instead feeding a bullshit reason which creates false tensions.

Thank you big corporation public relations. You're awesome.

There's always Blockbuster by kwsNI (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 09:14:03 AM EST
We've been more than happy with em.  Turn the mailed movies in in-store, exchange it for a movie then, and the new movies arrive in the mail about 2 days later, often before we've watched the in-store movies.  Not uncommon for us to have 6 movies at home from them.  And the 2 free video game rentals a month rock too.

That was on my "possibilities" list. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 09:18:49 AM EST
But, since they claim they are keeping the feature now, I'll hang until they flip-flop again. My plan had been to try Blockbuster for a few months when they cancelled profiles. Maybe we'll get back to that point though.

depending on how many you view and your turn over rate.. Can be much cheaper if you don't watch much.

Do they have real stores any more? by ad hoc (2.00 / 0) #4 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 09:58:21 AM EST
I thought they all closed. Or is that just around here?

The problem with Blockbuster... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 11:20:34 AM EST
...is that they never have anything at a store that I want.  You see, Netflix has a vast library and even they have trouble with some of the movies I want to get (I just about shit myself when they got Fantastic Planet and Raise the Red Lantern, but they still don't have The Nasty Girl and don't even have a listing for Pushing Hands).  Now I've never checked out Blockbuster Online and have no idea what their selection is like but I know for a fact that there's nothing at a Blockbuster Store I have enough interest in to even leave the house.  Why would I want to go there and look for movies I know they don't have?

Blockbuster, as far as I am concerned, fails it on so many levels...  But that's just me (and my wife and her siblings and our friends).

Jenn and I were driving...somewhere...the other day, I think maybe in Wichita but don't recall exactly. Anyway we drive by what is clearly a privately owned (read: Not Blockbuster), new movie rental place that is about to open.

On the list of "Businesses Destined to Fail", opening a video rental store on your own has to be right up at the top these days, doesn't it? I mean, if Blockbuster of all people can't make money at it, Netflix is killing brick and mortar stores, every grocery store you enter has video rental, and now even freaking McDonalds is offering those Red Box things, where exactly is the niche for the privately owned video rental store anymore?

Not entirely true... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #8 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 11:29:16 AM EST
Look at I Luv Video and Vulcan Video in Austin.  Now, maybe it's because it's Austin, but they're both thriving and that's not even counting the really small ones stores like Waterloo and Encore and Pedazo Chunk and others.  I think the real problem with Blockbuster is that all they really have are the latest hype for $5-7 and possible late fees that you can get at Tar-Djay or Wally World for $10-20 to own.  Hell, movies are so cheap that Welsh Girl and I have already decided that if something's worth renting twice, we'll just go out and buy it.  Blockbuster built themselves on the foundation of having the newest thing and sticking with it.  The newest thing is everywhere now.  No wonder they're flailing in cowshit...

Unless you plan on serving a specialty crowd. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 11:48:32 AM EST
with movies you can't get anywhere else and can't find to buy? Yeah, your not going to do much with a new video rental shop.

Netflix didn't set it up as a war. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #12 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:12:33 PM EST
The press portrayed it as a war.

Personally, I find getting that upset over something as meaningless as the order your rentals are listed on a web page to be a little... over the top. Netflix has always served the four of us just fine with a single queue, thanks.

Has anybody seen my clue? I know I had it when I came in here.

Sorry to say, you're wrong this time. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #14 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:28:24 PM EST
Netflix said that they had to dump profiles in order to do some unspecified (and therefore make-believe) SUPER DUPER NEW FEATURES OMG! However, now that they are keeping profiles, those that haven't used them, and thus don't see how much better Netflix is with them, are whining in their cheerios about it because they're being prevented from getting this SUPER DUPER AWESOME NEW FEATURES OMG! Even though nobody actually knows what those features are.

That was Netflix, not the press.

Netflix by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #13 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:13:11 PM EST
What makes you think they are lying about anything?

Seems to me that story was a common one: Company tries to discard $feature because it is a pain to develop, sees the public outcry, and backs off.

It's a story older than "New Coke".

They were lying. . . by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #15 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:29:25 PM EST
when they said they had to dump profiles in order to support new features. Funny how they couldn't give an idea of what any of these new features would be.

I doubt it by ucblockhead (4.00 / 1) #17 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:50:56 PM EST
Having been in that situation, it is more likely that someone down in the bowels made an estimate that said something like "3 months, but we could do it in 1 if we got rid of profiles".

If I had a nickel for every person who told me that a difficult change in a system I worked on should be "trivial" without having any knowledge of the code base, I'd be a very rich man.

It's why I stopped taking fixed-bid programming tasks.

Oh sure, by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #20 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 02:01:23 PM EST
there are other ways it could have been done. Most of them involve hacks that make the entire system a steaming pile of dog crap, which is the main argument they made against them. So, hire somebody competent to fix it.

I don't see why it should have been the users that had to pay for Netflix fucking up their own code base.

You mean by Pasofol (2.00 / 0) #16 Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:43:14 PM EST
people pay to watch their movies?

I just assumed the only way to get them are through "illegal" downloads.
